Eggbound?

I have a seven month old Redstar pullet who had never layed an egg. The day before yesterday we had an extra egg so I guess it was her but we are not 100 percent sure because there is another pullet not started yet. Our Redstar, Julia, has been listless for about three days. She eats a little and drinks quite a bit. Yesterday she had poopy butt so I brought her in and discovered a distended abdomen around her vent area. I gave her a warm bath and cleaned up the poopy butt and soaked her in water. I put her inside in a dog crate with towels. Today she seems to have layed a hard yolk with many layers and no shell or white. She is not pooping anymore except the white urine type stuff that comes out. She is alert but quiet in her cage. I got some gloves and did an "internal exam" but could not feel anything. She was empty inside that I could feel. I tried just now to masage her abdomen but I don't think that helped. I am about to give up for the night. I wish she would be at least pooping.

It sounds like she either is sick and is laying soft shelled eggs as a result (possibly coccidiosis), or she is indeed egg bound. Push at an angle toward the vent to push any possibly stuck eggs forward. You'll feel a hard mass if there's an egg. Give her an antiinflamatory (motrin 200 mg).

Too late, she passed. I will do a necropsy latter.

She was an internal layer. I guess there was no saving her. THat's why there was no "egg" that I could find.
