My 4 chicken friends and I stare at the door excitedly, any second now, it would open, and our human will pick us up one at a time and take us to the area where we can run about freely. The door slowly opens and we all run out into our small pen. Our human smiles at us and gently picks up Skye, the only white chicken in our flock, also the top of the pecking order. She gently holds her in her arms until she's sure Skye is comfortable. She opens the gate and walks out with her.
Q, another Buff Orpington like myself, looks for tasty bugs and worms while we're waiting. It isn't long before she finds a June Bug, (Which are plentiful right now) while those things are annoying to the humans, always repeatedly smacking into their faces and arms, they're nice and tasty for us. Chipmunk and Hershey, the two bantams, run after her and try to steal her snack. She runs and carries the June bug with her, I decide to join in on the fun. I run quickly after Q. Hershey,Chipmunk, and I chase her for a few more seconds before she finishes the tasty bug.
Our human walks through the gate once again, scooping up Hershey. She walks out of the pen with Hershey snuggly in her arms. I walk back into the coop and eat some food, soon Q and Chipmunk join me.
We eat for a while, when we hear the door open once again, I race to her. I get there just before Chipmunk, who moves as fast as the animal she was named after. Our human laughs as she picks me up, making sure I'm comfortable before opening the gate again. I stare at all of the pretty green grass, the miniature horses, the blue birds, and the lovely, bright blue sky. She gently puts me into a small area surrounded by chicken wire. I cluck to the other hens, they cluck back. I peck at the grass, happily scratching the ground while waiting for Chipmunk and Q to join Skye, Hershey,and I.
Soon Q joins us. I stare at the ground, looking for something juicy to eat. Oh hey! A worm, that's just what I wanted! I grab it and start to eat it. The others notice I have a treat and chase after me. I manage to stay just ahead of them, trying to eat it while running. I accidently cut the worm in half with my beak. NOOOOOOO! Chipmunk grabs the half I had dropped, everyone starts to chase after her. Wait, when did Chipmunk get here? She must have arrived when we were playing keep away. I decide not to chase after Chipmunk, for I'm very tired at the moment. Sigh.....
AROUND 9 HOURS LATER.....
I squack proudly, I had just laid my first egg! YAY! My human comes out of the house, they had been gone for quite a while. She walks up to the chicken wire. "Hello girls!" She says, then she notices the small brown egg, "Eggnog!" She says excitedly, "You've laid an egg!" She walks into the pen and gently picks it up. "Good job girl!' She says, "I'm so proud, 4 months early!" She gently strokes my back and praises me endlessly. She walks out with the egg, maybe another chicken would have been mad, but I don't mind at all, I'm so proud she's going to use it! She came out a few minutes later, (Without the egg) to tell me it is 4 centimeters long, and around 2 centimeters wide. The perfect ending, to a perfect day...
