Our only issue with that is all the predatory birds we have around. I first go around with free ranging birds didn't go so well.

Another thought: The days are getting shorter. Unless you have artificial lighting in the coop, typically egg production drops off during the "fall/winter" months.

How old are your birds?
Take pic, with coin for scale, of 'foreign' scat.

A ground hog would leave a huge not to be missed hole and pile of dirt.
