Eggs are dropping while roosting !!!!!!

Do you have fake eggs of some kind in each nest box. Mine won't lay in a nest box without an "egg" there.

No fake eggs, they are chicken eggs. I mark the ones I am letting them keep and remove all of the others.

Is the nesting box inside the coop or outside the coop? The reason I am asking is because you stated they are laying around 5am before you get up to let them out of the coop. They are old enough to lay eggs.

Oops, yes, the nesting box is outside of the coop. So, I guess I'm not giving them the opportunity to get out of there to lay huh? Your question turned on a light. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Sounds like I need to make a few changes.

Did you get your nesting boxes in the coop? If so how is it going?

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I have moved the nesting boxes inside the coop. They have not had anymore egg dropping incidents. In the event, it would take them a couple of days to lay in the boxes, I put a lot of hay under the roost to soften the fall of the egg. They hadn't laid any more of those eggs with the soft shells, so that's a good thing. They have laid eggs in the boxes. I did leave a few boxes on the oustide of the coop as well for those who want to lay outside of the coop during the day.

Thanks for the advice everyone.

i have a couple that dropped from the roost last week . around 6 or 7 at night. i was in the coop when it happened . i was like what the heck are they doing. they have 8 nest boxes in the coop. as soon as it hit the floor all 10 birds were on it like hotcakes ate it right up. it doesnt happen all the time but now and then. i guess it was time to come out. they have access to a fenced in run during the day and can go in and out of the coop all day.

I've had some eggs appear under the roost when my girls started laying. Most of them had really soft shells. They will get it right. One thing that you want to stay on top of is collecting the mistake eggs as soon as you can so that your girls do not get in habit of eating them.

what i cant figure out is that mine are all a year old or more and they drop them from the roost on occasion.

You got me there, I am new to chickens so I am learning. Mine did quit laying them under the roost though.

Blueseal,
I had one that did that a lot. She eventually had bad prolapse and had to be put down. It broke my heart. She was one of my first. Check the hen in question and see if she is prolapsed. Gloria jean
