eggs are filthy, coated with dirt and garbage. what happened?

The dirtier the chickens and their environment are the dirtier the eggs will be. Simple as that.
Huh! In my case, the opposite is true. When all is dry, the eggs are clean! It's mud that makes my eggs dirty.

Provided the nest boxes are clean and dry, my guess as well would be mud or poop on their feet getting tracked into the nest boxes.

Occasionally you'll get birds that are messy layers, that is, they may poop a little while pushing out eggs, but that should only affect the contents of the nest box they use and provided you clean it up regularly, shouldn't affect most of the other eggs.
