So we had a hen go broody outside. We moved her inside to a kennel and a rabbit nesting box (which was plenty big for her..). Well, she is currently on day 20, and i just got back from St. louis. I came in and checked under her, and caught a glimpse of maggots.

I lifted her up and saw there were TONS of maggots!! (Those weren't there 3 days ago..) :P So i kicked her off and decided i was just gonna throw everything out to the chickens. Well, i was too stunned to do it right then, so i went back up to the house. I was looking at my calendar and realized we were on day 20, and i thought i would clean the eggs, refresh the bedding, and put her back in to finish it off. So i did just that.
First off-
Will the embryos live if the whole outside of egg is covered in poop? Missy obviously didn't realize she had to get off the nest to go potty... I cleaned the eggs off with warm water, so they didn't get chilled. They look good now, but i don't even know if they are even alive..
second-
what will happen since there was a lot of maggots around them. DOes that effect them at all?
Thanks,
Sam

You did what had to be done. Generally washing setting eggs is not recommended, but this was an extreme case. Generally hens that defecate in the nest do so because food and water is within reach from the nest - they have no reason to leave. If you allow her to set again, I would make sure that she leaves the nest at least once daily. Good luck and give us an update on how things turn out.

I think thats what we did wrong.. She is in a large dog kennel, but where the food and water are in her deal is within reach

Well now we know! Thanks Sourland (:

Did.you candle the eggs? I'm worry about the same thing except mine are in a incubator. The darn flies keep trying to get in the incubator, at first it was through a hole in the back of the bator, so I hanged a fly strip. Now they are trying to get in the front vents. I am so worried thinking if one fly gets in there and lays eggs on the eggs as they are pipping the maggots eat them.
