Hi everyone,

We've had chickens for about a year now, and we have been very satisfied with the quality overall. However, I am lucky to crack an egg without getting pieces of shell in the egg. Compared to a grocery store eggs, our shells seem thicker and more durable. When I crack an egg the shell typically fragments instead of breaking in half. The membrane is very difficult to puncture and doesn't always break open.

We feed layer pellets, usually kalmbach hi omega. We also offer free choice calcium supplement and feed them back their eggshells.

Does anyone else have this problem? I'd like to think it's an indicator of good health but it is getting rather annoying. Do I need to change something in their diet?

How do you crack them?
Usually, flat on the counter helps prevent shards vs on a corner or bowl edge.
Usually on the skillet or bowl edge. Guess I hadn't considered that but I've always cracked eggs that way.
