Eggs good or not

Is there a way to tell if an egg is good or not. I was told if they float they are bad is this true?

If an egg is bad it breaks down and gives off gas, thus a rotten egg will float in water. It may also be a lil "off" before the float effect, but if it floats I wouldn't eat it.
