I’m really hoping someone here can help. I have a 2 year old chicken that has laid eggs with calcium deposits. But now she is laying soft eggs and they also seems to have calcium deposits!?

soft eggs are breaking inside of her now and I just put her in an epsom salt bath and one broken and one not broken just came out.

Picture of blue eggs from 5 days ago in the back, picture of soft egg from today in the front.

No change of diet

I’ve asked about this in multiple forums but no one can or will help :( I’m hoping you can!

Thank you in advance, Kelly

Sorry you are going through this, especially the eggs breaking inside her!

Did she lay normally for the last 18 months? I mean with only some calcium deposits on the shell, but a normal shell?

Most of egg laying is genetic. A lot of people think diet has a huge influence, but if you are feeding a decent layer feed or have the oyster shell on the side, that should be sufficient.

If a bird was being starved - then diet would effect the laying much more so, but if a chicken's general needs are being met, diet will have a limited effect.

These tend to be much more genetic and not much you can do, don't hatch her eggs if you get a good one.

Yes. And within 4 days it went from extra hard shell to soft shells that are breaking before laying. I have to give her Epsom salt baths to get them out.
