Eggs in incubator 8/22. Anyone else putting eggs in?

Currently have barred rocks in the incubator...and will be adding buckeye eggs next!

A pip! A pip! Lockdown for the first part of my group was supposed to be yesterday, but since we've lost power twice for 5 hours each time, I figured a day late wouldn't hurt, plus it fit better with the second group of eggs - I put the frizzled cochins in a day late and the french black copper marans in a day early. They went in at 11ish, and by 2 one of the cochins had a PIP! Its still just a pip at nearly 5:00, but I can see the beak moving... A PIP!!!!!

When I candled a few days ago I had maybe 7 hopping cochin embryos, I can't tell a thing with the marans. Glad I got the brooder set up, looks like I"ll hopefully need it tomorrow!

Next group hits lockdown friday, and those were candling well last time I checked. Bring on the babies!

Had a look in my eggs again tonight and I was treated to the clear outline of a foot and 3 toes pressed up against the shell briefly, how awesome is that!!!!

Only a week to go and all is looking good.

Candled again today. Looking good here! Had one quitter, but 4 out of the original 5 are looking great! Getting much harder to candle with that big chick in there! Put 7 other eggs in later, and only one not fertile out of that bunch. Can't wait for the babies!

Just had 6 Dominiques hatch - and am saving eggs to do another batch in a week or two.

Typically it is said they can be kept twelve days, then the viability drops 5 percent, then one percent each day thereafter. This seems like reliable information. I personally don't think it is worth keeping the eggs past two weeks, but if they are special then by all means until you can incubate them. A friend gave me twenty eggs from one really really good hen, and only six hatched. They were collected over the period of about a 35 days or so, so staying good for 12 days seems about right.

If you want to gather eggs like so just put them in an egg carton, pointed side down and put it on it's side. It won't sit flat, but that is good, that way the points will be angled slightly down. Then just turn it once a day to it's other side.

Hmmm... good to know! When I put my eggs in, I was coming home from work on my lunch break to check under my hens and grab the eggs and put them in the bator! I thought they still had to be warm. I'm learning soooo much from this site! Thanks!
