I just ordered my first batch of eggs and the incubator is heating up. I live in and urban part of California, the bay area. I'm wondering how the eggs get here. Do they just show up in my mailbox? Do I have to pick them up? Any advice for a newbie hatcher?

Thanks!

My mail person was kind enough to put the eggs on the front seat of my daughter's non- running car. I looked for them for days and finally saw them in the car. They sat in the hot sun for at least 3 days.

7 out of 12 hatched!

Every batch I've bought was just left in my mailbox. That can be bad news if it's in the sun, because the eggs can cook. So keep an eye out for the mailman.

Now here's the hard part... after they arrive, let them "rest" at room temperature for at least 12 hours before you put them in the incubator.

Depends on your postman. Mine keeps them in the cab of his truck so they don't have to withstand the heat/cold(whichever season), and walks them to the front door. We are usually home when he runs so he knocks VERY loudly cause he knows we are up in the den and can't hear the door otherwise. We have a rarely wonderful postman... Some folks aren't so lucky.

ETA: deleted the letting them set advice, someone was already reminding you as I was writing.

It depends on your post office or how the package is marked. I've gotten 7 shipments of eggs this year and I have an agreement with my post office to call me when they get a box marked "hatching eggs"so I can pick them up myself. However the last batch they ignored the agreement and stuffed it in my mailbox. I gave the post master a call but was told the carrier was new and didn't know any better. So it's pretty much a crapshoot.

Our carrier leaves the box right at the door. And since my husband leaves for work right at the same time our mail runs we never miss it, and so it doesn't stay in the sun.

ETA: I think its really nice of him to leave it at our door cause our drive way from the mail box to the house is about 50-75 yards away from eachother and there is no way for them to get the truck up there so the poor guy has to walk the box up. And it's hilly too!

our postal carrier is a young lady..

she drives into the yard and hand delivers any package that she figures is important to us..

She has twice already picked up a couple of live chicks from us and dropped them off where they were supposed to go, just to save us a trip.. can your carrier beat that??

she has been in the yard so many times, that the dog doesn't even bark at her anymore..
