I have two coops one gets 8 eggs a day and the other gets about 3 eggs a day recently I've only been getting 3 eggs a day from one and 1 egg a week from the other I saw two snakes yesterday both were rat snake ( one might have been a black racer ) but one was about 4 feet long and the other was about 2 and we also have a lot of skunks around here. What could it be?

Oh my goodness, I do not know what you have down in Alabama sounds scary to me. When you said a rat snake I had to see where you live because that is one thing I did not think of, here in upstate New York I have to worry about the bigger things, I was going to say maybe a rat(as in large mouse LOL) but now you got me thinking, we do have some snakes here too, just not rattle snakes, I hope not anyway. Well it was just a thought I hear that Rat's like to steal the eggs.

My bet from experiance it is a black rat not a racer. It would be the one eating one egg. But I bet your gals are hiding eggs on you too. Another one could be they are eating them also.

We killed a few rats last year but I don't know of any place that they could hide them there are a lot of holes in the bottom of the coop th part that is dirt last year we had some armadillos and a skunk down there but my cousin ran it off but there was two but we still have several

We feed our chickens oyster shells too, but we were getting 3 eggs a day from 8 chickens. Now they are back to laying 8 a day. I would suggest you try making a nesting box attacked to the wall a little higher up to rule out snakes and possibly rats.
