Don't order eggs during a heat wave. Tossed out all but 5 when I candled them Monday (day 16) The only giant blue cochin egg I had left looked like slime today. Fingers crossed on the other 4 (2 blue orps and 2 blue ameraucanas).

Gonna have to order more eggs......

I'm beyond heartache. 20 eggs, 5 looked okay, 3 had chicks, 2 hatched, 1 survived. Yup, 20 eggs, 1 chick. Have to try again..... in cooler temps.

Thanks theoldchick. It was easier to come to terms with a bad hatch then to make my daughter give up the only surviving chick. She cuddled it all night after it hatched, but I had to convince her to let our broody adopt it. My broody has been sitting for nearly 8 weeks on plastic eggs and ... well... rotten eggs, for something to hatch. We introduced them and after an hour of awkward inspecting, they bonded. I have tried for the past few days to get a picture of the two, but the little bugger just disappears under her every time I get my camera near.

Incubator's all scrubbed out, and I'm already planning to order more eggs. Poor hubby.....

That figures. Somewhere I read that the boys are a little more durable, so after a rough hatch, you will probably have more roosters than hens. That's been my luck, anyway.

But! Fingers crossed for the next time . . . . (hehehe) . . . .

18 cochin eggs in the bator. DH made me promise to stop buying eggs. If I win them in an auction, then it's not considered buying.... right? I WON them.
