eggs on eBay?

hey, does anyone know if eggs from ebay are reliable or if they are they a waste of time and money. answers are much appreciated.

This depends on ALOT. One of the biggest issues is finding a good breeder. Many "Breeders" on Ebay end up being scams. Also shipping is another large factor in your success rate. Shipping eggs is always a gamble. However, many people on BYC have had successful hatches from Ebay eggs. I'd say try to find a reputable breeder and start by trying a reasonable amount of eggs.

I am hatching my first eggs now from ebay.

1 was clear
4 either didnt develop or were quitters
1 hatching early (right now)
2 due to hatch this weekend (fingers crossed)

I order the 6+ buff brahma eggs (they sent me 8)

The ebay seller had good reviews. But I also looked for a seller that had several seasons of selling eggs.

I have ordered and hatched eggs from ebay about 10 times. Usually with good results.
Some eggs handle traveling by mail better than others, though. For example..I raise Serama chickens, and have ordered eggs from ebay from reputable breeders all over the US . Shipped Serama eggs do not have a high hatch rate..so, being aware of that, if I get 25-50% hatch from shipped eggs, I am happy!
I have also ordered French Black Copper Marans from 2 breeders on ebay and 90% hatch rate with both orders! Very Happy!
Also, check out the remarks left by other buyers in the sellers recent feedback to see how high their hatch rate was.
It's always like a Christmas present to receive eggs in the mail..so many potential great chicks in there!

i've ordered from ebay and have usually had decent hatch rates. For the most part the shipping is the risky part, but I also got 37+ quail eggs that were incubated in 3 incubators with eggs from over 4 sellers that hatched and not a single quail egg developed and the seller wouldn't do anything about it. It had to be her eggs and not my fault, but thats the risk you take.

I've had good and bad experiences from e-bay eggs. I've ordered purebred eggs before and hatched out chickens I didn't even recognize the breed! I've had a majority of eggs not be fertilized as well. But I have ordered eggs and gotten a 50% hatch rate. I have learned that it does pay to try to find a seller that lives closer to you. The further the eggs have to be shipped and therefore handled by postal employees, the harder it can be to get a good hatch. As everyone else has said, I good breeder is key to getting a good hatch. You need someone that is responsible in how the chickens are set up (if your getting purebreds) to ensure you are getting what are purchasing. The breeder also has to take good care of the birds and feed them properly so that fertility is high and the chicks are healthy when they develop and hatch out. I do look around locally for people selling fertile hatching eggs too because not having to ship does seem to make for a much better hatch! Shipped eggs can be great though because you can get breeds that you may not otherwise be able to get in your area! So keep trying and good luck with your hatch!
