Eggs Should Arrive Tomorrow And Its Cold Outside

I am expecting a dozen silver laced wyandotte tomorrow and the weather turned cold yesterday. The lows have been in the 40's for the past two nights and is suppose to get that cold again tonight. The eggs are being delivered usps and I dont know what type of temps the boxes have been exposed to.

Should I be worried about the temps

All you can do is cross you fingers and hope they didn't get to cold on the way there. It is suppose to be in the mid 40's tomorrow so if you are not going to be home I would put a note in the mail box for the delivery person to take them to the PO for you to pick up. If you are going to be home bring them into a room that is 55 to 60 and let them gradually warm up. then before putting them in the incubator set them beside it and let them get to room temp before putting them in.

I would call the post office this morning and let them know you want to pick them up there....By the time they come to your house, they might not see the note and just leave them.

If it's too late to call the post office, leave the note but also a large cooler to buffet the box against winds, cats and dogs that might decide to get at it.

That's great advice, may I add, I would leave some of those handwarmers in the box under a layer of towels.
That will ensure a safe temp. inside the cooler.

I think my bigger concern is with handling and not temps. Eggs can handle much lower temps than most realize. Add the packing to that and if done well, they are virtually insulated from much exposure. I had a person contact me to tell me a package of eggs I sent them were placed in a refrigerated truck by FedEx and the box was ice cold when it got to him. He wanted to let me know because he felt the hatch was doomed. He contacted me 3 weeks later to say that most of the eggs hatched. I don't recall the number, but I was not surprised and thanked him for letting me know.

eggs arrived after 5:00pm yesterday, all were in good shape. I placed them in a carton and let them settle overnight, going to place them in incubator around noon
