I have 8 chickens, I usually get belween 6 and 8 eggs a day.
My girls usually lay between 9 am and 2 pm. When I went out there this morning at 6:30 am there were 2 eggs, one just a yolk and the other had a very thin layer around it almost as thin as a plastic bag. Is this some sort of deficiency??

Are they getting enough calcium? Also, if they are new layers, it is normal to have some weirdo eggs for a while..... I guess it takes their bodies a few cycles to figure out what to do. The jelly eggs are so weird though! :)

I had the same thing here a couple weeks ago.. it was a double shelless egg.. the one egg broke in the nesting box.. the other was connected by some kind of cord thingy..
My girls lay the same time as yours and also this happened sometime before 7 am.

My girls are on layer feed w/ oyster shells.. also have oyster shells on the side... They free range also. I've only had these girls since May 18th.. I had a thin shelled egg the first day in and then this egg was 2 days into the new coop...

They have been laying for about 3 or 4 weeks. I will try the oyster shells,
I have given them yogurt and sometimes I put a tums in the water. They have there pellets in the morning and leftovers, bread, vegies and bugs for dinner.YUM!

What do the Tums do for the chickens??, never heard of that.

Someone told me it was a way to give them calcium. I put 1 tab in the water jug.

Tums should not be a regular food item for your chickens; they are used in a pinch when you have an eggbound hen, but ONLY then. Discontinue immediately. Is their regular feed a layer-type feed (mash, crumble, or pellets)? They should have good quality layer feed at all times, and offer free-choice oyster shell (I put it in a separate bowl).

I put the tums in this morning thinking that calcium may be the problem.
I give them pellets and mash I fill up the bowls in the morning and it usually lasts all day. In the afternoon I give them fruits and vegies and whatever else I have (no meat). They are really good layers sometimes I get these massive double yolk egg hopefully this wierd jelly egg is a one time thing. Where do I get oyster shells?? I live in a pretty urban area and the pet stores dont have them. Any good web sites?
