Today I watched my chicken lay the contents of an egg on the ground (not in a box!) All of my chickens rushed to eat it once they saw it had been laid. The egg did not have any shell! Not even a rubbery one! I am nervous she may have an egg laying defect! Please help!

IMHO chickens lay shell less eggs as opposed to soft shell eggs because of diseases or other defects in the hens' reproductive track.

If she's just started to lay, it's very common to have shell less eggs, soft shell eggs or small eggs. Mine are just now getting consistent with eggs production & quality. I wouldn't worry.

I have a 2 year old hen that has been laying beautiful eggs until this week, now she is laying eggs with no shells and turning around and eating it, if the other chickens don't beat her to it. She is free range, used to use the nesting boxes when she laid eggs, now she just lays the rubber egg in the coop. She has free feed of oyster shells and she is on a layer pelleted feed and scratch. Why is this happening? Can anybody help me? Thank you
