eggs

So you are saying these birds are only about 8 to 9 weeks of age? Or you've had them a month or two, and they are mature (full grown) birds?

As to the rooster, hens do not need a rooster to lay eggs. They lay eggs with or without a rooster. Their eggs simply won't be fertile, ie, won't hatch chicks if a rooster isn't around.

He looks to be a Black Sex Link rooster...which is a hybrid mix.

Breeding him over your Dark Cornish hens will produce barred black chicks (black and white barring) for both sexes.

They will be lighter in build than your Cornish but heavier than your BSL. They will produce better than the Cornish, but not as well as a typical BSL female.

It actually is a good match. You could get some nice dual purpose birds out of the match.

Dark Cornish are known to go broody and can become good mothers. Likely one of the hens will go broody for you at some point. Put some eggs under her if so.

If you get to that point, stop by the Broody Hen Thread for some great advice at broody hen raising. It's a great way to raise the next generation....the hen does all the work.
