Eggtopsy: What happened to my egg? {Graphic Pictures}

Pics
There was another that pipped, but it and the last one that successfully hatched both were away from the air cell. The one that pipped but didn't make it had most of the yolk absorbed, but it wasn't completely absorbed. The last one that hatched successfully had a mushier belly, so i left it in the incubator until i felt it was ready to come out.

I did open the incubator because i had eggs i needed to turn, and i did remove the hatched chicks. I was worried that they would be playing soccer with their hatchmates, so i removed them when they were dry.

For what it is worth, i am in fl, but it isn't the humid time of year yet.

I also used tap water on day 18, could that have caused them to have this problem?

So you were doing a staggered hatch---eggs put in at a different time??

In my area----if I open my incubator during the hatch----my hatch % goes way down

I never set a staggered hatch---If I am setting guinea/ducks/chicken eggs I set them where they hatch at the same time.

I do not know if opening the incubator during lock-down would affect you or not, but your results have happened to me and family/friends----a long time back when we(different locations) opened ours---to add water remove early hatched chicks, etc. Now we do not open for NO REASON and we all have great hatches.

It looks like it made it till close hatching time. Things happen----who has he exact right answer why???

Let me give you something to think about. """I""" am a firm believer that a boody hens should NOT be bother during their hatch----the last 3 or 4 days. I do not even tilt her to see the eggs during this time, because I believe it causes the moisture to escape that's needed for the hatch----I for sure do not remove a eggs to look at it. I am a TOTALLY hands off during this time-and I have set probably 150 hens in the last 3 years-----ALL 150 of them hatched, on time, with rarely a slight problem and rarely a fertile egg that did not hatch.

Some will say it does matter, all I am posting is my personal results------something for you to think about. Good Luck in your future hatches.

Thank you. Next time...

It's Florida, but the humidity in the spring isn't too high here in Jacksonville. The coop has great circulation and the nest is an old milk crate. I would say that humidity was pretty average. It definitely never made it through the inner membrane. It looked like it tried because its beak was pressed into it. I hope that makes sense. :/

Yes, I was trying to do a staggered hatch. I was told that it wasn't a problem to do it, but I guess it just doesn't work. I probably ruined the staggered eggs too:( I really should learn not try things when they seem like it shouldn't work. Do you think the water I used could have been an issue? I know it can cause stomach issues for me, but I have problems with my stomach anyway, tho the problems have gotten out of hand since I've been here.

I get so upset---seeing people telling others how to hatch and what to do---then find out a lot of times the one telling this is on their first hatch---they are telling something they read or the teller has really bad hatched etc----really bothers me. The new hatcher follows this info and spends 3 weeks taking care of the eggs for Nothing---were informed wrong.

I feel No Experienced Good Hatcher will tell a newbie its ok to do a staggered hatch in one small incubator. Sure we that hatch a lot do a lot of staggered hatches, but like me----when the eggs get to day 18 they are moved to another incubator to hatch, then in a few days the next 18 day old batch of eggs are moved to the "hatcher" etc, etc. None hatching in the original incubator.

Your water----I do not know----it does not cost a lot to have it tested at the health dept----you feel its Bad???You can buy distilled or water at the grocery store cheap or get some from a family member with good water in gallon jugs to use.

Whenever I don't listen to the logical aspects in all things, it comes back to bite me. I really should have ignored that person and went with my instincts. I do think the water here isn't good, so I will just get distilled water. It will eliminate one more possible cause.

Soooooooo I candled eggs at day 14 and I think six of one breed died between day six and twn, I have sixteen of another breed that are all strong and growing, and twelve of another breed that showed two that quit, and one that was infertile

They were all shipped eggs, the two breeds with the least success were from the same breeder.

Is this a quality issue or a shipped egg issue?

I can upload photos tomorrow
