Egyptian Fayoumi

Christine Heinrichs of the Society for the Preservation of Poultry Antiquities has asked me to write an information hand out on Fayoumi's. Is there anyone out there who owns them or who has owned them that can give me their input bad or good. I will be getting some come spring to free range. Need something hardy and cautious for around here.

A friend of mine has some. They are hardy, flighty and the roos crow early. She keeps hers up but her hen frequently escapes, hides and broods. They would be a decent free ranging breed. I just question how easily one would be able to find their eggs or capture them if needed. They seem very cautious.

I had some in the spring. My little roo crowed at 3 1/2 weeks old! The hens were very talkative and flighty. I called them the "Little Houdini's". They could escape any enclosure I put them in. They were very cool and comical, I loved watching them. I would have kept some but I decided to focus on others so I found them a home.

I have two Egyptian Fayoumi's, Cleopatra and Nefertiti. They are the ringleaders of the bunch and are loud and wander far from the coop/barn. I love them!

Is it true they lay gray eggs? Does anyone have any pictures of the eggs they lay? And are they big...the eggs? I also hear they are not good layers...not that it matters, I'd have them because they are pretty.

I am curious about the gray eggs though.

This is Pooster my Fayoumi / Game Hen cross. Along with raising Fayoumi's I would like to breed more Chickens that look like this. Not as flighty but still great for free range. Besides I think he is one handsome guy. I have a new batch of chicks from him and his sister that I'll post when I get a chance.
