Elastrator Band Dehorning GRAPHIC New pics pg 10

MissPrissy asked for a photo of the hole...it's graphic.

This is a photo off FlightsofFancy's phone. She was here when the half horn came off - this photo is mere moments afterwards (afer blood stop powder and antibiotic spray).

That's not as bad as I thought it would be but still pretty gruesome. LOL

I am going to have to think about this more before I ask my vet to do it.

Great job! Very interesting....

Thanks for all the info and pictures! After this last picture, I am wondering what you could use to cover the open hole, on one side, and open wound, on the other side, that the doe won't just rub off on the fence. It's bound to itch as it heals and I would think she would be rubbing her head against everything and get dirt and stuff in the hole.

My goats did not have holes after the horns came off, they didn't tend to use them to much and they usually took a good while before they came off, I'm going to assume that's the difference.

Mine had some discomfort soon after the band was put on, for the first day or so, after that they hardly seemed to notice, but the horns are very tender, so you don't want to touch them at all! I had one doe who was a major drama queen, so far my only failure (I plan to reband, just haven't gotten around to it). As soon as I put the bands on, she'd scream and leap into the air, falling on her side and lay there like she was dying, making the most pitiful noises, she would not stop rubbing them until she managed to move them up (now she has half horns). If she'd been my first I don't know if I would have done any more, so anyone considering it should, be prepared for the occational drama queen!

I'm curious will that hole close? I mean is it made of all bone or is there tissue that will cover closing the open hole? If if will close how long will it take? Thanks for the pics & info, Very Interesting.

So Oreo FINALLY lost his uni-horn today. We originally banded the horn 10/28/08. We added 3 more bands to it 1/2/09.

We brought him in, cleaned him up including clipping as much hair away as we could (gummed up my clippers, blegh blegh). Used strong saline to flush the sinus out - gobs of clotted blood and puss came out. The smell is not something I can describe. I've smelled it before in old, infected dog wounds from my tech days...but still. I finished up with a good flush of antibiotics and started him on another injectable series.

He'll be locked up in the barn until treatment is over because he's still so darn skittish. I'll get some follow up pictures in a couple weeks.

Whooow! I am so glad that is off!!! So was it just hanging like Nic's or did it fall off by itself?
BTW: I banded my little Nigi wether and one fell off in the 2nd week because he is such a punk and kept butting all my girls. BAD GOAT! Then it took about a month for the other to almost fall off. It was hanging by a thread (literly). I had to pull it off yeasterday because...like a hange nail, it was not really attached but was painful. Now he is so happy and hornless!
