Sociology includes the study of religions (there are more than just one of them, FYI) as one of the most significant societal institutions.... And I have always found my professors to be very open minded and supportive of religious views.... what colleges have you been hanging out at Royd? Must be the college of: "Take a sensationalized account of a radical school or professor and paint all higher learning with that brush."

In all of my years of education (and I have many under my belt), I have yet to hear a college professor degrade any religion, or suggest that any religious view is wrong or should be stopped... I have heard my professors encourage students to be open to the views of others, including those whose views come from a religious standpoint. My professors for the most part have been open, encouraging, non-judgemental and thoughtful people.... all excellent qualities that I have found lacking in many of the attitudes of some religious or conservative people... I guess that shows us all that religiosity in itself does not always safegaurd against sinfullness.
I didn't know you got to meet the professors in online college.

trying to inject some humor in this thread.

My son is studying western civilization and his professor is not a Christian but does say it is the most favorable religion pertaining to the treatment of their own people.

Google it. It happend in your "free" country

And a lot of terrible atrocities have happened in our "free" country, as well. Ask the indians about the genocide against their people. Smallpox blankets and forced sterilization anyone? How about forced committals of people into mental institutions? Forced sterilization, shock treatments and lobotomies, anyone? There is no country without the stain of oppression, including our own.

Funny... I actually did have 1 class last year where my instructor lived in Arizona (I am in California). It was on sociological theory.

You know there has been cases where online courses have been conducted by inmates. Are you still in school or is it ongoing education?

The rampid push of socialism and liberalism in the political world, which affects us all, wasn't put there by high school dropouts...Believe me, I read alot of politcal message boards and most of the arrogance, contempt and disdain for other's points of views comes from those on the left, I.E. the halls of higher learning.

Sociology isn't socialism. LOL I think you may be confused. It's also not the study of "being a liberal", although it can be eye opening in terms of understanding our true place in society, such as class, etc. Are you suggesting that we should let high school drop outs run things? I suggest that if you don't like the way things are being run, get politically active, run for office or something. Everyone loves to complain and blame liberals but refuse to do anything themselves. You don't have to go to college to run for political office.

Ongoing education. Gotta work and go to school, so it takes some time. Darn those liberals giving me financial aid and student loans.... without those I would be a productive worker at McDonalds and wouldn't get any of my crazy political views or think too much.

Interesting, I've been on many political message boards and have seen the same things from right leaning individuals. Could it be that both sides have extremists who take things too far, and are very vocal despite being a minority? Maybe what we're seeing are trolls who get a kick out of starting an argument, by taking a radical political viewpoint and playing as if it's a major political belief.
I've actually run across more political trolls than I have people who earnestly believe radical views. The anonymity of the internet does strange things to people, strange things indeed.

Now be nice to those liberals they are giving me a ton of work for my business...ARRA (American Re-investment Recovery Act) money, I contract for the government some. Of course my kids their kids and their kids... will pay for it.

The rules I just read say religuos topics are discouraged not banned like discussing animal rights groups and cockfighting. (When religion rears its head in a thread, the thread is usually locked before too long.)

Many times the mods will allow the mention of different religions if they are related to the topics and people act decent and not get offended but allow others to have their say, disagree and leave it at that. What gets a thread closed is usually arguing or bickering. (And religious comment leads to bickering) One thing that is repeated on this forum is people need thick skin and that applies whether you are discussing killing a predator or any other subject.

I will tell you what I get told by the mods, if you do not like the conversation on a thread move on. (The conversation here is supposed to be about a woman who was abused by some students. That topic I'm OK with and won't be chased away by religious prejudice. I'm happy to exchange views on religion and spitiualism but it doesn't work as a topic on BYC)) This thread is about disobedient kids and what if anything that works to help them and what is taught in the Bible about disciplining kids does work, (Tell that to the kids abused by priests) has worked and will work, maybe not for your kids (My kids are fine, thanks, and don't get personal) but it has for mine and many others that I know and if I were to get offended which I am not or do not get "offended" by someones opinion whether they say it as fact or just opinion I certainly would not threaten other posters with shutting down a topic for some personal satisfaction. (It's people who insist in turning a discussion into a bible thumping session that are likely to get the thread locked)

Punkadoodle and I disagree on a lot of things but we do have enough respect for each others opinions that we do not make threats.... however wrong she is.
