Elector PSP and Mites

YES...thank you! I prefer orally, because I can put it on a piece of bread and they gobble it right up....just have to make sure I track who has had it and who has not. So that will be a w/e activity as I let them out of the coop. I have a variety of sizes, so that will be a bit more challenging, but they are all in the 3-5 lb range.

And then of course do it all again in 10 days

I recommend Permethrin spray for the mites. Most feed stores such as Tractor Supply carries both the ready to spray and the concentrate that you mix with water. Spray inside their coops spraying every crack and crevice, on and under the roosts, inside and out side the nest boxes, ceiling, walls, everything. I had mites for the first time ever this past summer and the birds were terrible. I initially sprayed weekly and eventually got rid of the mites but the birds looked terrible. I used permethrin poultry dust and dusted the birds good. Now the birds are now looking much better and no more mites. I actually gave the birds flea baths thinking it might kill the mites and it did some but there were a few after the baths. The mites can feed the life out of the birds if not treated. The mites can hide in the cracks and crevices in the coops so just dusting the birds may help but spraying inside the coops kill the mites but it does not the kill the mite eggs so a thorough spraying is needed with followup sprays so when the mite eggs hatch they will be killed too. Just my opinion.

Great product, however not good to use if you have cats. Permethrin does not break down quickly in the cat's system. It therefore can be very toxic to them.

I posted a few weeks back in Emergencies, because I had a rooster with a severe infestation and my regular treatment was not working, so I spent $150 on the Elector PSP. My husband and I spent 3 hours spraying my 30 chickens between all the feathers and then the rest of the day cleaning the coops, removing the litter and spraying them down really well between all the cracks and crevices. I checked today (a few weeks later) and a few birds still have mites. My previous treatment had been Poultry Dust with Permethrin, but I applied that 3 times prior to getting the PSP and still found mites, so I assume they are resistant to that. What else can I do?

You're supposed to retreat in 14 days. I am having the same problem but I have 100 chickens so it has been my life right now. I first tried the permethrin but that wasn't as effective. Now I'm doing the PSP

With permethrin you do need to do repeat treatments and thoroughly spray every crack and crevice, everywhere in your coop. I had a severe infestation last year. It was my first. I tried almost everything including DE with no results. It took a few weekly spraying in the coops but I did eventually conquer them. I have had a couple of smaller outbreaks of mites but quickly subdued them with weekly treatments. I'm pretty sure the wild birds brought them. I sprayed weekly for about a month and stopped. I don't want the mites to develop an immunity. Also if you read the fact sheet on Elector PSP, it says near the bottom that repeat spraying may be necessary and that you should rotate it with something else like permethrin. Good luck...

I have used ivermectin in the past but for my large flocks the permethrin works great. I use the concentrate permethrin in a gallon sprayer with a wand so I can reach the hard to reach areas. I have a lot of coops.

Only have experience with feather mites and ivermectin pour-on: retreating every 10-14 days was crucial. Had to do three rounds on time and then we won the battle. If you miss the timing, new eggs are laid and it all goes on. Too much poison on the birds can be dangerous, too.

Look at the Exotic Animal Formulary for "safe" / tested / recommended dosing on many birds.

I retreated weekly for about a month and conquered the mites. I mainly treated inside the coops and sprayed under their shade/rain tables. I also put the permethrin poultry dust in the nest boxes. No more mites.
