Electric Fence basics for dog control

Quote:
They are single wires attached to the charger unit which supplies them with an electrical charge. The wires are mounted on insulating standoffs, about 4" from the posts or supports of your fence. The idea is to have the wires stand alone around the perimeter of the fence and not touch anything else.

You place them at varying heights, depending on the critters you are trying to deter. For dogs, it's at about 6", 12", and 18-24."
Since dogs go everywhere nose first, it doesn't take long before they get zapped on the snoot - and learn to stay away.

One way to get your predators to discover the fence sooner (and therefore train quickly) is to put a piece of hot dog on the wire when you first set it up.

Every Predator (or dog) will try it....every one gets a good jolt...everyone is trained.

Good Luck

Pretty much what I was thinking. Hang a few bologna strips on the fence, plug 'er in and stand back.

Oh, the smell of singed dog hair. Sweeeet!

I have Catahoula Leopard dogs. Very high prey dogs. Granted 3 of them are over 6 years of age, but 1 is 3 yr old and full of herself. I have 4 foot no climb fence around my yard with a electric strand 6" off the ground, extended 4" into the yard. This is the best deterrent I know of to keep my dogs IN their yard. Now if these were blue heelers, I'd have an electric strand on top of the 4' fence. My chickens pen will have an electric strand around the outside bottom of their day pen. when I turn them out to free range, Lord help them if the fly into my yard. They will be dead birds. I can not blame the dogs. It will be an opportunity. i have shown the dogs the chicks. I allow them to watch me feed, water and tend to the chicks. But these dogs will do what is natural. I can only try and prevent accidents with my dogs. the electric wire will help protect my chickens from wildlife in their coop and lot.

I dont know what a Catawhatsis Leopard is, but your dogs sound like mine. The electric fence it is.
Can you name your electric fence set up, including equipment used?

I've had great success with electric fence and dog control. Both my own and other peoples. Nobody has been shocked more than once. That's all it took. The mutts stay away from the chickens even when they free range now. I have three wires around my run at 6", 18" and 36". The bottom one is the only one that has seen any noses. I used the nylon twine with stainless wires twisted in it. Mainly because it is easy to work with to get it tight and repair. My charger is a Parmak SE3. It has been discontinued and replaced with the SE4 model now. I have only had it out of commission twice in the last 5 years. Both from lightning strikes. The charger survived both times. Just blew the 2 amp fuse. Here is my coop/run and the site for Parmak.

The last SE4 I bought was about $140. The twine is pretty cheap. The coop is online with about 2 miles of other fence.
