Has anyone tried a simple one or two wire electric fence to keep your chickens contained and protected from predators?I read an interesting article by Robert Plamondon who said this type of simple fence can be very effective. The first wire is placed about 5” off the ground and the second wire is placed 10” off the ground. Step in fence posts are used and it is powered by an energizer.

It won't keep the chickens in. Their feathers insulate them.

Might work for keeping them contained but I doubt it would keep anything out. A fox/cat/dog/etc would jump that pretty easily. Electric tape/wire around the outside of a mesh run might deter things better if you had problems with animals grabbing chickens through the fence.

Just found out the electric fence method is absolute BS, unless your birds don't really want out anyway.
I recently lost a dog after he became addicted to chicken poop. So for my new puppy i tried to fence off the front yard with electric fence.
I put up 4 strands 3", 7", 12" and 21". All my chickens went under the 3" wire with no problem whatsoever. The only one who took a hit was one of my Orpington hens that has molted all the feathers off her back. I then watched them go through it several times. Sometimes under the bottom wire sometimes between the two bottom wires with not so much as a "boy howdy!"

Netting works better than fencing IMO.
I've never had a ground predator loss with electrified netting and the birds can't get out.

Yeah i am going to pick up some netting. If my wife will let me put it up. Am not worried about predators; just want to keep chicken poop out of my front yard until my new puppy is a little older and his immune system is all systems go.
