I moved my coop to a different part of the yard. It isn't very far from where it was originally - maybe 25 feet. However, the raccoons are giving me a hard time for some reason since the move. They got in the coop last week and killed a rooster. Then the other night they got in and mortally wounded a hen and a rooster.

My coop is very big, 20feet x 20feet. I put my dogs in the coop the other night - I think that was a pretty rude awakening when the raccoons showed up. Then we put a network of electric wire around the coop at the top and bottom.

It works wonders. Apparently the little (insert 4 letter words here) raccoons don't like getting zapped and they haven't gotten back in.

I would highly recommend the electric fencing!

We use the electric fence from premier1 and have had no problems with 4 legged animals. However the hawks got 3 in one week. We are trying cds on a string,. After 10 days...success so far. Anyone else have tried this?

I haven't had many hawk problems. I'm not sure why... They're abundant here. We also have the occasional eagle. I've read that the cd on a string works.

I remember my grandma putting pie pans in her fruit trees to scare the birds away.

We are in Missouri not that this matters, but my resident ornithologist says hawks dont kill lots of chickens but once they have had success they are relentless. I feel we are lucky that wr have hadc10 days of success considering they killed 3 in a week. Cds are 4modern day pie pans:)

Well we have lost half of our flock. We have moved them several times so they will have shelter. We are growing corn and they love to stay in the fields but the hawks find them. We and our "bird" specialist think it is one or a pair. We have 15 new babies growing up and don't want them to become hawk bait. Any experience with this?
