Electric fences as a deterrent. psuedo poll.

I have the OLD style Weed Burner type! I use it only at night or if I am not home. If you use a very powerful unit like mine Beware! If the chicken touches it with their head or skin, THEY ARE TOAST!!! Mine is the weedburner type whitch means it does not pulse. It is always HOT and very strong! I lost 1 when she reached through the fence and it touched her on the chin.

She was my sweetest gal! But any way... after I fixed the fence ( lined the 2x4 welded fence with 24" if chicken wire) I have had no problems! I unplug it during the day because I have a small run attached to the coop (with HOT wire) The small run shares 2 sides with the big run ( No wire) I don't want the birds touching the wire while in the big run. I use the small run at night and in bad weather. But I allow them into the big run during the day. The coop is not ready in the big run yet. My two dogs both 35-45 lbs have touched the wire! They are fine! No problems! They now stay far away from the fence. LOL I highly recommend an electric fence if you have a predator or dog/cat issue!!!
I ran 1 wire 6 inches off the ground and another around the top. I then ran a ground wire to the fence directly. I also had a bunch of scrap wire I placed around the bottom of the fence like an apron. They will deffinately be gronded when they touch the HOT wire! LOL

I have a two wire set up. One at 4 – 6 inches above the ground and the second one at about 24 inches above the ground. We have lots of coons’and possums, as well as red and grey foxes. Coop is secured at dusk with or without the fence energized. First night the girls spent in the coop I had the fence on and sat outside as it got dark. Sure enough, two coons walked up and stuck their nose on the wire. First one to get zapped jumped backwards squalling; the second one jerked around to check out all the commotion and got zapped in doing so. I could hear them crashing through the brush for what seemed like over a minute. Possums don’t react quite so loud, but they do “fluff” up and move away faster than you have ever seen one move before. My four year old granddaughter eventually “accidently” touched it … once. Now she is the onsite expert about electric fences.

Use an electric fence and would not be without one. Have had zero problems in the coop/run area since installed. Run a single line out around my small orchard and deer problems stopped immediately.
