I've got an Electric hen which I've used plenty of times before. I quite often put my hand underneath against the metal surface to check it is on.
I've had a bit of trouble with it recently though.
I came to it on Friday at the end of the day - none of the chicks were under it and when I tested it, it was stone cold. I've no idea how long they hadn't had heat for - but they all looked fine, they weren't huddling together and they weren't shivering (3 days old). They were at work with me so I put them in the car and took them home and set them up at home and the electric hen heated up nicely.
I set them up in the garage with the electric hen but I kept noticing that they weren't really going under it much at all. I just checked it and the surface feels hotter to me than usual - normally it feels like it has some warmth but I could leave my hand there, I can touch it for about 5 seconds but then want to move my hand away.
I tried the medical thermometer but it is too hot for that.
Just wondered what temperature the surface should normally be?
I've moved it higher to make it more useful but these chicks don't seem bothered about going under it much at all. It was unusually hot yesterday at 33*C but the garage was cooler than that.
I'm wondering if it has developed a fault and that perhaps caused it to trip the electrics on that strip at work? And now it is giving out a higher temperature and maybe it will trip again?
It is one of the black ones about a foot square. Something like comfort leisure WP Series.
