Electricity out with baby chicks?

Our last ice storm our power went out for 30 hours. I started out with them in bed with me, then I got tired of laying down. I got bottles and filled them with hot water and made a ring for them with 5 20 oz. bottles and all 15 of them snuggled inside their ring. FINALLY the neighbor came and brought a kerosene stove and when it was lit and warm, I put them back in their brooder box and set it 3 inches in front of the heater. We took shifts, DD, DH, and myself, all night long to make sure they didn't get too hot or catch on fire(cardboard box). It was exhausting, but I have 15 living babies that are now 3 weeks old. They were 3 days old when the power went out! They're SOOO worth the effort!

Well what if you kept some of those hand warmers from Walmart on hand? Those little pouches up by the register. They're like what a buck or two? At least you wouldn't loose your babies!

I second the woodstove, but also put in some hot water bottles.

HAHA I actually had some of those and thought about that. I would have used them if we hadn't gotten the heater from my SO SWEET neighbors. Really the heater was all that saved my babies. 30 hours is a long time!! I thought it was 16, but was informed by my not so tolerant DH that it was 30 hours...LOL! I think he was counting the minutes, he must've called the Electric Co. 600 times!!!! Poor man

I will be going to walmart to get some stuff... the power goes out here it is usually several hours before it comes back on. our electric company is several hours away. and we are usually the last ones to get power restored...

Woke up and the electric was out again

my chicks were all snuggled together trying to keep warm. My huband was getting his shoes on to go out to the truck and connect a power converter to the lighter so we could run the heat lamp off the truck. That was when the power came back on again!

Geez. We got a foot of snow yesterday/last night. I have never seen this much snow in TX!!!

I wonder how much one of those propane heaters run.

$50, give or take a little. They also make models that will go on a gas grill tank so you don't have to buy a bunch of those little bottles.
