Ella2025's Experiment Broody Hen Hatch-A-Long

I literally just woke up randomly at 4:30 am and I can hear the roosters crowing. I can hear a very low pitched quiet cockadoodledoo! Saffron is the only maturing Cockerel at crowing age. He is exactly 16 weeks and 1 day old. Here's the most recent picture I have of him and Pepper, he's a fine gentleman already!

His dad has (very surprisingly) never shown any aggression toward him, even when he tried to mate with his hens and was getting into fights in the flock. He (dad) has always had a 0 tolerance policy for other roosters, lol. Now that he crows, I fear that they might start fighting and there's no way Saffron would win sadly, so there will have to be some sort of separation between the 2. Once it gets light out I'll go observe them a bit.

He's grown up into a very handsome little man!

Saffron's dad became very aggressive. This morning some of the chicks (they're like 14 weeks old but still babies) were outside in the 2 Ft of snow looking very cold. I shoved them in the dry coop through the automatic door and made sure they stayed there. Then Moony pecked my hand, HARD. I had gloves on and he took the glove with him and dragged it into the depths of the coop. Every time I'm in the coop he will side eye me and try to launch an air strike on me 😭. He will have to go, very soon, but Im not sure what exactly to do with him.Very likely Saffron will lead the coop after he's gone.

Ouch, sorry to hear that, definitely not good to have to constantly watch out for an aerial attack. 🙁

I came into the coop to dump a bunch of food scraps. They Saffron flew straight at me! I thought he was attacking me but then he just landed on my shoulder and stood there for a while. I was so confused. Then he flew straight in the coop door and left. I think he got this skill from his mom who can literally fly like a bird. I'm still super intrigued on what he was doing.

I have a few that do this. They use me as a launchpad to get to some higher obstacle whenever they get the chance. It can be a little unsettling if you're not expecting it though.
