Just picked up these 4 day old purebred embden goslings. I did not vent sex them as they were so young and was fearful of hurting them at this young of an age. I did however try to pick out 2 that were very distinctive in coloring as I've always been told that the females will be darker at hatching than the males. I would be perfectly fine either way as long as they are not both ganders as I only have 1 other 1 year old toulouse/african female. So, what are your opinions? And no they will not be staying in the box. They were only in there for transport.

Just wanted to come on and give an update as the goslings are almost 4 weeks old now. I finally decided to go ahead and vent sex, and to my surprise I have 2 females. I guess that goes to show that this theory isn't necessarily always correct. I am 100% happy with this outcome though. I no longer have to worry about fighting between a gander and my muscovy drake whom is currently the only male I have since my elderly rooster recently passed. I will of course be keeping him with his own ladies during mating season and away from my chickens and geese as I am currently doing now. The man I bought the goslings from also sells hatching eggs so they will still be able to fulfill that desire once the time comes.

And the first baby of the year has made it's appearance! A little muscovy duckling. This is the first of 23 that are set to hatch over the next couple days. I also have a clutch of buff orpingtons chicks set to hatch in less than 2 weeks. I went from thinking my girls were never gonna start laying eggs to becoming overrun with lots of babies lol.
