Emergencies happen. Are you prepared?

Summer is coming & we live in a fire & earthquake prone area.

We’ve been collecting old dog crates off craigslist just incase (God forbid) we ever needed to evacuate the animals.

What are your areas most common natural disasters? What preparations have you made, or would you like to make in case of an emergency?

Wildfires and floods. Not super prepared but we have a plethora of cages, kennels, you name it. I have tried in the past to make evacuation plans but with our farm changing daily it's quite hard.................Our county fairgrounds would open up it's barns in the event of an emergency and let people house their animals there until it's safe to return home. I think we'd head there. I should be thinking more about this though. Thanks for the reminder! Maybe assigning a family member to a certain group of animals would work?

This is me too. I try to be at least little prepared, but I get distracted & animal math happens while I’m busy doing other stuff.

It seems like I blink & a couple years have past & things need to be reevaluated.

Yep, basically what happens to me I think in the moment of a disaster, we'd just be working and running around so fast trying to keep everyone safe that it wouldn't matter whether we had a meticulous plan in place or not. But then again I could be wrong I maybe should have a map/chart/list of all the critters at our place so if we were gone and neighbors were doing chores they'd know how to evacuate everyone. I should also add the fairgrounds supplies bedding and food in case of emergency so we wouldn't have to worry about packing. And there are several feed stores in town which is usually not a fire or flood zone

Even on my best day I could never accomplish a meticulous plan. My best hope it to have a trailer, crate for everyone & some food & water. I’m realizing as I type this that I have no emergency water.

Tornadoes and blizzards are our main disasters.
I have various cages if needed, but their coops are pretty well suited to our weather. It would take a lot to blow them over.
And we have a generator if power goes out. That’s more for my fish then the birds though.

Planning for both is oddly similar because we're well up at the top of a hill clear of all flooding short of a return engagement for Noah and his ark so the threats are downed trees and loss of power.

Fortunately, my SIL's place on the same property has town water -- though we'd store water anyway. We can plan to be out of power for a good week without being in much trouble or discomfort except from heat and humidity in the summer. We're thinking of getting a generator for the new house.

The animals will be taken care of in place.

They down branches and power lines, but as long as you don't try to go out until it melts they're not that bad.

Quite beautiful, actually.
