I have and ee hen who while holding her discovered a badly broken wing. and prob infected. Question is can I cut off the wing and she be fine? Are there major vessels in there that would warrant not doing this??? I am not a "killer" there is no way I could do it. I thought about doing it but I just can't bring myself to. Any advise would be great!!!!! it is broken right at the bend by the back. It is the humerous and it has punctured the skin I don't think bandaging is gonna work. Ahhhhh the poor thing, although she doesn't seem to be bothered by it at all, which is odd. It looks terrible. She is a really big hen!! Thanks for your time!!

No, you can't just cut it off, there are arteries there, and she will likely bleed to death. If you can't do the deed, I would highly suggest taking her to the vet for an amputation. They can anesthetise her, and remove the wing properly, she will also need antibiotics.

Unfortunately, I have no advice. Just wanted to say hang in there and hopefully someone will come along with some help shortly. In the meantime, don't do anything extreme. Do you know how or when this happened? You may want to isolate her for now and keep her in a nice quiet, warm place. Maybe do some searches for similar injuries and outcomes for now. Do you have access to an avian vet?

Well I didn't think you could cut if off was just hoping, because my lights are gonna be shut off tomorrow so spending money at a vet right now isn't an option, Awww I feel awful for her.

I would imagine this happened 2 or 3 days ago she is a really tame chicken and I hold her alot. Today i just wanted to rub under her wings and I saw it I about died, when i saw it and two bones are sticking out because I did try cleaning it and cuttin the feathers away so I could see better. I was a vet tech but only ever worked on dogs and cats know nothing about birds other than I know it can't be splinted, it is more than likely infected, and I thought about cutting it off but I knew there had to be blood vessels and stuff in the wing. It is not sounding or looking to good, but I just can't think of killing her, but if I had to, do you think we could eat the meat I mean because if the wing is infected could the whole bird be infected? I would hate to just kill her for nothing you know. Ahhh I just don't know. I am just trying to go through all of my options. the thought of killing her makes me sick in my stomach

I don't know anything about eating meat, so I can't help you there.

It sounds like you really love your hen. Do you think there's a way you could arrange a payment plan with a vet? Is there a humane society or low cost clinic around that may be able to help somehow? It wouldn't hurt to at least do some research and make some calls...

Is the wing hanging or dragging? Are you positive it's broken? Can you post pictures?

I will see what I could find out, but we have no avian vets around. Yea the wing is definitely broke, I can see the two bones sticking out of the inside of the wing. she is not draggin it and she can still pull it up. If anyone knows how to find a vet that would look at a chicken I would be all ears.

this is under her wing, there is a bone at the top covered in white cream and another bone a little lower sticking out. The only thing I can think of that happened to her is too many roos trying to jump on her at once other than that I have no idea what could have happened. Both peices of bone are covered in white antibiotic cream.

Ya, if it happened 2 or 3 days ago, it's more than likely infected by now. I wouldn't highly recommend eating her with that unknown infection looming...but if taking her to a vet isn't an option, the killing wouldn't be for nothing, it would be to avoid undue suffering for her...I'm sorry, I wish I was closer, I would do it for you. I had to end the suffering of my absolute favorite little cockerel a couple of months ago, and I spent a half an hour crying and retching on hands and knees in my front yard afterward, but it was what I needed to do for him.

Do you have an emergency clinic around you anywhere? That's where I work, and we would euthanize an animal if it were suffering and worry about payment later....
