Someone I know called me saying a squirrel had hurt one of her quail bad this morning. It is now in my possession, and appears to have been totally scalped and it is possibly missing an eye. It has calmed down, and has drunk some water. I just put a little Neosporin on its head in the hopes that it won't get infected. I put it in a box inside the house to keep it warm.

What else can I do?? I feel horrible for it :' (

We had a mamma hen do that to 4 of her chicks this spring. One had a brain injury and could not be saved, the others we rescued from mom. We kept them warm, put them in a brooder with no shavings, just paper so nothing could get stuck in the wound. We put neosporin on at least twice a day, being sure to throughly clean the wound before putting the medicine on. We made sure to put vitamins in the water and hoped for the best. We had a feeling that they not all would survive so just went day by day. The one with identical injuries as you have pictured, ended up surviving and his eye that we feared he had lost is just fine! Hope that helps!

Ps - our scalped friend is named Scully! He made a great recovery and is the lone rooster over his hens. We feared neurological problems and have not seen any.

That makes me feel better, I was shocked when I got a good look at the head. I'll just take good care of him and hope for the best!

Just make sure that the scull bone is not injured, if there is brain coming out my suggestion would be to cull.

Honestly, quail will do that to each other quite often. Just make sure the neosporin doesn't have any pain medicine in it, and the bird should be fine. They heal up pretty quickly. A lot of us 'quail people' don't even treat an injury like that, just seperate the bird and they get better on their own. The bird will get stressed out more by you messing with it than it would by having the injury. But a bit of cleaning/antibiotic won't hurt.
