For future reference I suggest feeding a sick chick a raw egg yolk and or Nutridrench

If the chick has made it to where if you fed it, it would inhale the food instead of swallowing it, it would probably be best to cull.

There was really probably nothing that could be done. Some just hatch too weak and can't manage to bounce back after the struggle of hatching. Genetics, incubation issues, nutritional deficiencies, etc. can all cause that.
There's not really any way of knowing for sure. Sometimes a few drops of electrolytes can help, but you said it was gasping. In that case, there's nothing that can be done. It will aspirate on the fluid and die. Molasses can help sometimes since its thicker, but it sounds like he was just too far gone. I've never had a chick like that recover. It's best for all involved to just cull a chick like that. It's sad, but is something that happens. It's all part of raising livestock.
