To be blunt , IMHO, the emergency section is not working in its current format...
... with the number of postings too many emergencies are sliding by through the sheer volume of non-emergency postings.
I feel the "old system" (one for EMERGENCIES and one or even TWO (> thinking of hatching emergencies) other threads worked out much better (for the poster AND the members wishing to help).
Seeing the sheer number of daily postings one might consider making this subject a separate section.
Who else agrees with me on this?

My problem right now is if I have an emergency, the search function isn't doing a great job finding old threads on the topic, and I KNOW they are there. Which means I add to the threads of emergencies, hoping someone will post yet again the answer.

Great discussion. We learned early on that the term "emergency" actually isn't appropriate when the sections are broken out because too many people feel that a sick, injured, or any other problem with an egg, chick, chicken, etc. is an "emergency".

If there is need for splitting, it would probably be done so that there are two sections:


Diseases
Injuries

If we had a third section called "Emergencies" there wouldn't be clear line of demarcation between which section a "disease emergency" or an "injury emergency" should go into. Also, people who felt they wanted a faster answer (and that is most people) would post into an "Emergency" section just to try and get a faster response. Does that make sense?

So, there are a couple solutions:

1) Members should properly post their issues in the correct sections. As Terrie mentioned, if the posts are in the wrong section, report it and it will be moved.

2) We could split up diseases and injuries and drop the "emergency" title

...within that section one could have EMERGENCIES >needing immediate attention! / INJURIES / DISEASE/ Treatment-Meds-dosages (how many posters ask for dosage info etc and then can't refind the thread?

useful health articles and tips could be placed in this thread also instead of them clogging up the emergency thread >once answered it could be moved to the treatment/med thread and within a short time ppl can look there first and only post in emergencies if it cannot be found there)
I do understand that in principle all are considered "emergencies" and of course if an injury or disease it COULD (initially) be necessary to post in the EMERGENCY thread > however, when it is resolved > meaning their question or problem has been answered or treatment started (or death has occured) it could then be moved to "injuries" or "disease" thread (now I am thinking about it might be good to have a miscellaneous section for when it does not fall within those two categories) ...

IF it has been moved and things get serious again one could simply make a new post in the emergency section and explain the (new) emergency .
And yes it will need a bit more patience from the mods and it may mean a bit more effort from the mods but if there is ONE thing on BYC that everyone eventually needs and uses (and is the most appreciated thing on BYC) it is the emergency section...

I'm with Diana (and others) on the searching not always working as well as I'd hope, but in my case, it's more likely that I'm just not putting in the best words to find what I "think" I'm looking for.

I've also been wondering about changing the TITLE of the thread once it's confirmed what is wrong (disease wise) or have viable possibilities...maybe that would help with future searches?

I agree w/Diana. And - I think parasites can most definitely have their own area, the buggers!
