Well, you would truly have to take him to a vet for some anti-venom if he was bitten by a poisonous snake. Alot of people don't take their chickens or geese or ducks to a vet though.

Perhaps you could just give him some antibiotics to be safe, in his drinking water. I wish I had better advice for you. I would make sure he is comfortable too and resting. Give him some vitamins/electrolites and some antibiotics in his water, and use a dropper to get it into him if you have to..........That's truly my only idea...

Good luck to you,
Sharon

If he did not die overnight, he may not.

Is there swelling on his neck? If so that could complicate breathing and would be a bad way to die slowly.

If not, I would say isolate him, make sure he has water and a warm quiet place, and leave him alone if you do not want to take him to the vet.

I know you want goslings, but sometimes the best decision doesn't concern our feelings at all. His "wife" will find accept another if he should die. I had my main flock master die, and the goose accepted the remaining male with no problems at all.

With no way of knowing what bit him, and how long ago, it is difficult to treat.
Down here, we keep guineas to help keep the snake population down, and so far, so good.
Also our chickens are free range too, and omnivors, so it's a double safe guard.

I feel awful for you.

Agreed. There wouldve been possible swelling at the sight of the bite and possible necrotic tissue forming around the bite. If you dont see any of that, it mightve been a "dry" bite. If that's the case, treat it as a normal wound. Flush with betadine and apply neosporin. If there's swelling and no necrotic tissue; give him 1/2ml children's benedryl only. Dont give him anymore benedryl until a 24 hour time period has elasped. Do not overdose him on the children's benedryl, it can kill him. After 24 hours are up, redose him once more if necessary.
If there's swelling and necrotic tissue, cull him.
