I am rather new to this site. I posted in an earlier post about a feral pigeon that was acting very strange, like she was hurt or sick. Well she was moving very slowly and I could tell something was not right. Well a few minutes ago a male pigeon jumped on top of her and was trying to mate with her. She could not really get away. She had diarrhea while he was on top of her. I immediately shooed him away from her. Her stool was yellow liquid. She did have a whiter poop in the morning when she was sitting by the bird bath though. Anyhow, this male bird kept trying to jump on top of her. I finally got close enough to her and grabbed her. I brought her in and have her in a cat carrier. She is sitting on a tee shirt I laid in there. I do not know what to do with her. I have no knowledge about how to care for a pigeon. She did try and eat when she was outside with the other pigeons but then the male jumped on her. I think is hurt or sick because she is not moving to well when she walks, she goes very slowly and kind of tips forward. I thought about bringing her to a rescue but I don't know of any. I do not want to send her to a place that will just kill her. Any suggestions? I live in Chicago Illinois in Jefferson Park area. I have no clue what to do at this point. I do not know is she is sick or hurt.

She did eat something a little bit ago when she was outside on the back porch. That is when the male pigeon jumped on top of her. Not sure if he was trying to mate with her or not, but I shooed him off. Here is a picture I attached. I do not know what to do. I mean there is something wrong with her due to how she is acting. She also pooped liquid yellow stool a few times. This morning is was a bit more white. I have her in a small cat carrier right now. I called our old Vet who use to take care of our Dog who passed away and asked them if they knew anything. They recommended a place called Fox Valley Wildlife in Elburn IL. She said they do Not kill. I called them and left a message. Should I take her out of the cage? It is small. Any suggestions please?? This is a pic of her when she was still outside on the garage roof.

She is cute.
Maybe you should leave it up to the professionals I have never owned pigeons.
Someone might help you on BYC soon

I'm not sure what causes yellow poops in pigeons, in turkeys blackhead causes it but not sure if pigeons can get that. I'll have to try to find some more info on that, for now maybe you could give her a bit (like a teaspoon if possible) of ground cayenne pepper mixed with water to form a paste and that mixed with some seeds or just some in her water if she will drink it. Cayenne helps treat a few diseases and it also opens up the blood vessels especially around the heart giving them better circulation so they're stronger

I would give her fresh water and if available some ring neck dove feed or chicken layer pellets.

If you have corn, beans, or peas in the house that would be a good substitute for now.

This is pigeons feed and is the best for homing pigeons in particular they thrive on it but is not available in a lot of places

Something else I meant to mention a teaspoon of apple cider vinager in the birds water goes a long ways in helping birds get back to normal.

Thanks for the ideas. Right now she is sitting very still in the cage. I am guessing she is petrified being locked in a carrier. I feel so bad for her. I am going to get her a bigger cage to put her in. I am afraid to handle her though, I am afraid she will fly off and fly into a window or something. I think she needs some kind of medical attention. I just do not know of any reliable places that would not Kill her. It sucks that no vets or animal hospitals will even look at her. I sent my dad out to go and get a few things ( dropper to try and get her some water, some of those doggy pee pee pads to line the cage with, and some small bowls for water and food). I have never cared for a bird before so I am very lost right now. Did I do the right thing by capturing her??? I feel so bad about it, I mean taking her like that. She must be so scared.

. Did I do the right thing by capturing her??? When you go by your instincts you are seldom wrong. She must be so scared. Pigeons are used to and can coexist with humans more than most wild birds. Pigeons are very hearty as birds go and at least now she has a chance to rebound where before she had little to none. She may be just mal nourished things are hard this time of year for birds.

Yes, I think you definitely did the right thing by catching her. Outside right now I would guess her chances would be pretty low (like probably 0%). Inside being cared for she has a chance but still might not make it since birds hide illness until they are super weak and almost dead.

Maybe you could try asking here also http://www.pigeons.biz/forums/ lots of pigeon folks there and some might know what is going on.

I forget where I saw this, but someone on that pigeon forum posted something like this (I forget the exact words) :
When/if you bring a pigeon to the vet make sure to tell them that it is a pet, and stay with the pigeon at all times while it is there to make sure they don't euthanize it.

That's all I remember from that post though, sorry.

Also it would be good to keep her somewhere dark and warm, that should relax her a bit

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Someone else posted on my earlier post that they can carry mites, is this true?? Yikes, I do not want to get an infestation of those. Are they contagious to humans? I am so lost and have no clue what to do. I called my old vet that use to see our dog. She told me of a place called Fox Valley Wildlife. They are a non profit organization that takes wild animals, and supposedly a No kill place. I called them and left a message about half and hour ago. I am unsure what to do. I mean what if she needs medical care. I do not think a regular animal hospital would even see her. They would likely know she was a wild bird I am guessing. I am so lost here and have no idea what to do. Is it okay to put her in a bigger cage instead of the carrier? The carrier is so small.
