We have 4 Jumbo Pekin eggs that are now 2 days overdue. Yesterday morning, we got our first pip, but it was at the wrong end! There was also bruising on two of the eggs (this one and his neighboring sibling) We waited 12 hours with no progress, so we decided to try to help. We chipped some of the shell away from the area and widened the hole that he made in the membrane. We left him for the night. We checked on him the next morning and STILL no progress. After some extensive research, we decided to help some more by chipping away the front portion of the egg where his beak is.
We waited.
Still nothing.

So, on hour 36, we decided to pull off the outer membrane where his beak was and pop the TOP of the egg off, in hopes that he could rip his way out of the membrane. We then wet the outer membrane down with water, and could clearly see large veins where the air sac is supposed to be.

He seems like hes strong. His breathing isn't labored, its quite consistent. He's chirping, but not as if hes in pain. Just as a response to our voices/quacks.

We put a wet paper towel over the back of him, being sure not to cover his beak. I need advice. We are heartbroken because of how helpless we feel. This is our very first brood. I know that we are playing the waiting game, but any tips would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Thank you! I will!
After further investigation, I've just learned that the shipping time doesnt count towards their incubation time. I was counting from their lay date. (which, in hindsight, seems obvious). So instead of them being 2 days late, they are actually due anywhere between tomorrow and sunday. Which means that our baby (of whom we have appropriately named Genghis Khan) pipped 3-6 days early.

OH NICE! I love difficult ones. Ok first get rid of the paper towels. Second, tell me about your settings, where is the temp and the humidity at and if you have a fan or no fan..

Perkins take 28 days so from the time you started incubating them to now how many days are we at? I see a lot of blood still inside his membrane
, so he is not ready yet. I can see a little bit more shell can come off.

I was keeping the paper towels there to 1. up the humidity (we are in Colorado, and its hard to keep moisture in ANYTHING here) and 2. to stop them from rolling. There is also a damp paper towel over baby to keep his membrane moist.
Without them, I could only get the humidity to about 60%, now its 75%. I also have ones in the corners of the bator, also damp.
My temp is set at 98.3 right now.
Its a farm innovations incubator model 2100, and has a turn dial which the slightest touch makes it jump a few degrees. (It once took my boyfriend 2.5 hours to get the correct temp) Also, the temperature gauge on the top is COMPLETELY off (by 10 degrees!) so we had to make this Frankenstein of a gauge. The babies were at 110 for the first day of us having them.
We do not have a fan.

Needless to say, our entire endeavor has been one uniformed mishap after another...

Talk to me please, your job isn't done yet, we can't let him sit there like that..if those veins dry up they will cause a blood clot, if that happens the process is over. So please talk to me. I can help you..
