Emergency wounded drake - lost him

Hows the duck doing this morning Amiga?
Telephone report is that he is "much better." I plan to depart in the next ten minutes or so to see for myself, and possibly irrigate the wound again. We have a 3 pm appointment to see the vet.

Prayers much desired and needed. This is the ugliest wound I have had to tend.

Any more ideas?

Going to go with saline solution again, perhaps dilute chamomile again (forgot to mention using that last night).

. I think your doing everything right to the tee. Have you given pain killers?

That's a good link, FGE.

That's pretty much how I was taught to deal with fly-strike on rabbits. Tweezers and peroxide, 2x per day till positive all eggs are gone, cover between treatments. Then blue-kote it up and cover. Check wound 2x daily to make sure no infection or new maggots till new skin has formed. (Luckily, I've not had to use this knowledge yet)
This is my plan, going to check on drake in a few, then haul him to the bird vet an hour away. And then I plan to post what the vet did and recommended.

No, Kevin565, I don't have any. Had not seen myself as duck EMT, but I think I need to reframe my self-image*. And pile up some more supplies in the duck/human medicine chest.

That drake is so tough and brave and gentle. Amazing animal. Started hissing at his person this morning, which she took to be another sign of feeling better. Last night all he did was hiss a little and nibble, no serious scratching, biting.

Right now I am sorely missing Vetericyn, Oxine, and pain killer. Recommendations for product and source?

*Also need to develop better, clearer thinking under pressure. I did not post in the Emergency forum yesterday. Sheesh.

And thanks for the hugs and prayers, y'all.

All of my feed stores seem to have a wide variety of Livestock Pain Killers. (Non Aspirin versions). You could call any of them and ask what they have in stock. However, your vet should be able to give you the best answers for your particular duck

Drake is with me at my house right now, since it took so long to try to irrigate out the yuck. Don't want to rush, he's been traumatized.

But still nice, got a couple of tiny pinches today, though.

Smelled some necrotic tissue - not a good sign, but there was not much of it. Still a few maggots, hard to get that area flushed. Not to introduce tasteless dark humor but I was relieved when I saw him drink, and it did not appear that the water leaked out. Mercy.

My instincts tell me there is likely a spot that I have missed noticing. He holds his tail to the right, which is his injured side.

Apart from having a ghastly looking wound, he seems to be acting like a normal drake. He is in "the limousine" in our kitchen right now, where it is relatively cool (upper 80sF outside today) and fly-free. His tetracycline water is with him. I plan to give him some peas shortly, so they will be well on their way when we take to the road again. Vet is an hour away, if no traffic snarfles or wrong turns.

Watching and praying.

Hope the vet can fix him up. You are a good friend. i try to stockpile meds here like Baytril for infection and metacam for pain. Luckily, my vet will sell me extra medication as she knows that emergencies most often happen when their office is closed.

Let us know how things turn out. i always want to learn as much as i can in case the same thing happens to my critters.
