Emotional Healing After Dog Attack.

Did you neighbor offer to make it right for you? I can remember losing a pair of guineas to a neighbor's dog when I was a child, and it always bothered me that the neighbor never offered to get me another pair. I often think about that decades later.

He and my husband settled on a cash amount, which the dog's owner paid the next day. He said if it ever happened again to just let him know how much he owes us. But to me, money has nothing to do with it... it's the fact that they are irresponsible with their dog. It's a bit irritating when people assume all will be well as long as they throw some money on the problem. Money doesn't bring my chickens back. :'(

@RhodeIslandRedMomma - Please do keep us updated on how your other chickens are doing?

We moved their pen to a new area and redesigned the coop the same day of the attack so they could start over fresh without reminders of what happened. That and the coop was made for 10+ birds, now we were down to 2 and wanting to make it as cozy for them as possible.

They spent much of the first week after the attack resting in their coop and hardly venturing into the pen. It was rainy for several days too, so that was helpful in allowing them to relax and recover. Now 2 weeks later, I am very glad to say that I'm starting to get my babies back.

They are out exploring in the pen much more than they were. In the evenings they stand by the gate and stare at the house waiting for me to come in for my daily visit, much like my rescued Leghorns did before they passed away from old age. Tip enjoys getting her breast scratched, preening my hair and using my pants as a napkin after she eats, lol. And Wilma - though never the most social out of the bunch - chatters away happily when I bring her a fist full of clover leaves to munch on.

I see their eyes pinning when I talk to them, so I know they are enjoying the company and attention. When I walked back to the house from our visit yesterday evening, my husband was standing in the backyard watching and said "I think they love you a little bit" with a wink. My heart swelled at the fact that he too noticed they are coming around very well. :)
