I am new to turkeys and 3 weeks ago I was given two wild (?) ones. They aren't in with my chickens but they have free access to the backyard. I don't cage them. If there is a storm I do put them in the garage.
Anyway....
These turkeys still won't eat scraps & cry a lot. They still seem homesick. I honestly feel they are very emotional.
Is this normal for turkeys?
Lol...also they sit on my back door step all day & watch us. They also watch the tv. It is really strange!
Another cute thing is their love for the hose. If I turn it on they start running under the water. :)

I'm a turkey newbie myself - received 4 poults April 1st of this year. I really like them - they are so different from chickens in terms of their bonding. They follow me everywhere, are always underfoot, hang out by the door when I go inside, and when they can't see me, seem to "cry." So, I think it's just turkeys being turkeys.

Ok good! :) Mine are underfoot a lot too. They circle our 14 foot pool and I swear they are trying to get in.
I'm having a lot of trouble feeding them. They seem to only want chick starter & it is medicated. I plan to eat these so I'm not wanting them to have the medications in it.
What kind do you have?
If I pick up my white one she falls apart crying. She seems to have more personality than my chickens. It is something I can see in her eyes. It is hard to explain.

Are you trying to feed them game bird starter I have always fed my Poults that for the first 20 weeks they grow fast and need the extra protein they could develop health problems if they don't get the nutrition that is needed.
I have heard of people mixing cooked eggs in with the feed from time to time for the extra protein remember all birds are carnivores eating bugs mice snakes or any thing else they can catch and eat.
If you want to train Turkey Poults bread is a great treat they love it if you associate the treat with a sound a bell a door shutting or yelling Turkey Turkey they will come a running if it is needed say if they stray in a direction you don't want them to go or just gone to far.
this works well after even when there adults.
I make extra biscuits on the week end and keep them in a bread bag on the counter for just this reason.

Believe it or not Turkeys can be trained just be consistent there like dogs with feathers I have even had them want to set in my lap
