Emu Egg Hatch-along

@FNF I tried taking a page out of your book and I bought a new playpen and put wood chips down. Now I'm having a panic attack that they're going to eat them and get sick and die. What was your experience? I mean I know it's normal for them to pack and taste them. View attachment 4053229View attachment 4053230
I understand … when mine were in their bathroom brooder I had them on little towels (didn’t want to deal with shavings in the house). When I moved them to the barn and the pine shavings they were probably about two weeks old maybe. They definitely picked at them at first and probably did ingest a few but must not have bothered them. I would make sure they always have food and water and even greens to be appealing over pine. I’m not sure of any age issues with emu chicks but my ducklings were ok in them. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I suppose keep a close eye on them until you feel confident they aren’t eating the bedding.

Oh I thought those videos were Pine shavings in the house. I'm really upset with myself because I got way too big of a playpen so now I can't sit and play with them or I'm going to be covered in wood shavings. We're definitely stuck inside for a few weeks cuz it's so darn cold. I'm ready to pull them all out but now I've made a mess 😪

Do you have some towels you can throw on top or something? I know they’re so messy.

Brilliant!!
Thanks! I need to think these things through and ask questions first!

I ordered a smaller playpen. This one is just too big for my office and I want to be able to sit and play without getting shavings everywhere. I got a few washable puppy mats that will fit in the playpen (so I don't have to use several towels) to switch out. I feel better about this plan.

Have you tried using those big pads they sell at Walmart? I like them better than puppy pads, it's what I start all of my ducklings on. I always feel weird buying them but they do work great
