Hey, Hen House Girl. No, he can't -- but what really confuses people is how close he can get! The males 'grunt' and 'guuuurrrk; and sometimes a 'bass-ey' grunt sounds like a boom.
However . . . the very first time you ever see and hear a female boom, you will never be confused again.
[I betcha a penny that there is a breeding-pair of emus less than 100 yards south of this keyboard. How do I know? I walked into the garden to pull the frost-covers of the tomato plants, and heard a female vocalise quietly down behind the fig tree. If a bird is vocalising, there is usually a second. Even though quiet and at a distance? Female]
