Enclosed Run: How high should it be?

We are just starting out and planning to build an enclosed run adjoining the coop. My question is, how high should it be? Some of the smaller chicken tractor type coops seem so cramped. However, do they really need a run that's 7-8' high? I would like for them to have ample space, but without going overboard. (We have five chicks) Any thoughts are appreciated!

I have seen runs as short as two feet tall. That short you can make a hinged lid to acces for cleanup.... me Personally I would prefer a run I could walk around in set up treats maybe bring a chair in on occasion to enjoy the show. Because they are too funny. I plan on setting up a couple of saw horses for movable perches out in the runs.

Folks who build tall runs don't do it for the chickens, they do it for themselves. Stay on here long enough, and you'll read post after post about people who regret not building a run taller. Trying to tend to, clean up after, and access chickens from a stooped over - and sometimes even crawling position is NOT fun. If you do a short run, then as P.G suggested, you'd best design a hinged top so that you're not killing yourself trying to take care of it.

Thanks for your replies, everyone! (And pictures too!) It sounds for sure that a tall run will be easier to clean and maintain. So here's a question...when you put in an access door, do you bury some sort of apron or barrier to keep animals from digging under at the door? I am planning on putting an apron around it but hadn't thought about what to do with the door area.

Looks like 7L did what you're talking about. Easy to do since most doorways are framed with a 2x4 (or whatever) across the bottom of the door opening. Sounds like pavers serve the same purpose. I could even see someone pouring a little quickrete (or something similar) in a small framed out entryway...

I don't think the CHICKENS need the head space, but you sure do!

At least that is how I feel. LOL I didn't want to bend over or do crazy maneuvering to reach into the run. I am a shortie, so mine is just under 6 feet for most of it and slopes down to 3.5 feet at one side.
