Has anyone built a duck enclosure on cement?

If so, do you cover the ground with something?

The ranch has a covered patio that has a drain (for the duck pool) that could potentially be used as a duck enclosure.

They will have time to free range as well.

We would also have a coop with bedding in the enclosed space.

We have two ducklings that we are building this for and would be open to getting another 2 in the future.

Any tips would be welcomed.

I would recommend putting a few shower towels on the ground so they can have a little soft something to be on. It might get a little dirty on the concrete because of their poop though. I don’t have ducks (I have 15 chickens), but I know chickens like to have some soft ground so their feet don’t hurt and so they can get some buggies.

You will also need to put ALOT of bedding down or ALOT of sand/dirt to help with cleanup and to make it more like the dirt. You would need to cover all the concrete because ducks can get bumble feet from it (I read more about it from some books and websites).

I built a chicken coop on cement and I first spread sand around, then on top of that spread pine shavings. The sand gave them extra padding, and they love it. By the way, the cement floor is great because you don't have to worry about predators digging into your coop!

The predatorproofness of the space is what initially made it seem like an option.

Since it’s covered you could probably do sand. I have sand in my enclosed coop with pine shavings on top of where they like to nest. I scoop the sand like a kitty litter box and it works great!!

That sounds like a good idea. Do you have a pool? If so do you put something different around the pool?

Wondering if somehow we could section off the pool and maybe put like turf around it and then do the rest of the ground sand

We have the pool away from the coop just on grass (which is a little muddy in places). I always wanted to put my pool on cement... My ducks walk up a rock ramp to get into it, if you have just a small section of cement for the pool I don’t think it should be a problem for the duckies feet as long as everywhere else is padded.

Oh good. There is a drain in one section so I thought we could put the pool there are surround it with some soft Astro turf. If we can section it off a bit somehow we could just hide down that area.

Mr dream is a splash zone, room to roam around on the sand and hang out and then a house type structure with comfy bedding.

Sounds like ducky heaven!!
