Beautiful gardein!'

Here is a great recipe for green tomatos. Slice them and mix with sliced yams, onion, and garlic. Cover with olive oil. salt and pepper to taste. Cook for 40 min at 375 or until yams are soft. Add walnuts and dried cranberries. Serve over rice or cous cous.

That's another reason we started using the hay bales...it picks your plants about 2-1/2 to 3 feet up off the ground. Some years we will get very little rain in the summer other years it will rain nonstop for months. The water just drains right though the hay making it impossible to over water the plants unless the bales are standing in 3 feet of water.

On the flip side of this you have to water the bales every day or at least every other day to keep the bales from drying out. So we just place soaker hoses on each bale and turn the water on for about 10 to 15 minutes every day.

My garden got pummeled by a hail storm!
I had very little to can this year!
I want some fresh tomatoes so bad I was dreaming of picking them last night, and everyone I picked was rotten!!!

I'm so sorry to hear that...

This was my garden on September 14th the day after Hurricane Ike hit....

All I did was continue to feed and water and it came back from that to this...

I am going to try some hierloom tomato varieties for 2009.

Also for blossom end rot add calcium to your soil. You can't add too much, I normally add pelletized lime. Also I add greensand, it is full of minerals.

Thanks!! I love fried green tomatoes...I cook them the same way I cook fried okra...a little egg wash and a dunk in some cornmeal...but I'm afraid if I picked these tomatoes to fry them my family would hang me. We haven't had any fresh tomatoes since hurricane Ike hit in September and took my garden out.
