End of the hobby for me

just got a notice in the mail. I guess it's the end of the hobby for me. . First violation is almost a $500 fine. The crappy thing is, if I lived about a mile down the road I'd be in the neighboring city of Elk Grove with does allow for chickens. :\

Can't explain how mad stuff like this makes me. Their are many other things city workers should be worrying about. Any way you can appeal it and explain how a mile down the road has different rules etc.

Yea, I'm bummed.. Sacramento county, you have to have a property with at least 10,000 sq ft. Mine is almost 7000 sq ft. Crazy thing is, I can apply for a permit, but the fee is $8574 annually and not guaranteed. Yes, $8,574.

Elk Grove use to be illegal, but recently passed it. Sac county is technically legal if your property is large enough, but most properties aren't 10,000 sq ft! It's crazy because sacramento city allows chickens now, but I live in sac county in a pretty rural area with many small farms around me, yet I can't keep chickens. I mean, I guess I can, if I'm willing to cough up $8500 to apply, but that's still not guaranteed. It's really ridiculous. What's wrong with going old school to raise your own chickens and try to cut back in the carbon footprint ? Sorry for the venting. Just bummed I guess

You might want to see if you qualify for "agriculture" use of your property. You may find federal law trumps local... It does where I live, but I'm in Ohio. Believe it or not, it's got something to go with the IRS. I have to prove egg sales, but all livestock become exempt of local laws

Only way the county would know is from a neighbor's complaint. I don't have any roosters, but my hens are noisy during laying. So someone notified the county.
