This afternoon I went out and found one of our New Hamshire reds; 4 months old with the back of its hed pecked away, and a bone protuding when she sounds. as we were Dr. her we noticed both sides of her back hollowed out. Looking at her she appearead fine. I noticed the open wound while I was feeding, no animals can get to them, so it had to be the chickens themselves. Has anyone dealt with this before, Please help.

i have
you seperate the chicken, clean up the wound and thats all we did, and our little guy lived, well he isnt little anymore now he is the the top gun :]

try a search on wound, open,,,maggots,,,,and you may come up with some things

seperate it from the others soon. and keep her/him seperated until completely healed. the others will see its sick and peck it to death. or see blood etc. chickens are cannabalistic... (i think thats how u spell it) also, make sure there isnt red on its head.. i did that before,, i marked my chicks with fingernail polish, and the chick that i marked with a red color, got pecked really bad.. they can see red really good i guess.

also, make sure the heat is lowered. someone told me to do that on here before when i had a problem. and make sure they arent overcrowded. to prevent stuff like this in the future. i hope your little one is ok. im sorry!

Thanks for the info, what has me worried is the small pencil like bone that protrudes in and out. We are cleaning it with peroxide and wound cleanser, and appling Neosporin with a bandage.

it is best not to use anymore peroxide as it is hard on the tissue. just clean/flush it out with sterile saline (you can make this yourself by boiling 1/4 tsp of salt in a quart of water>make fresh daily) and appy neosporin after. I would keep her inside to ensure against flystrike (maggots) ... you can mix baby parrot hand feeding formula (get at pet store) with her feed to concentrate the nutrition and give electrolytes in water for a few days.

Our light Brama did not make it, I had to put her down. Most of the wounds started healing but a vet told me there was no way for the bone that was protuding out to heal. I want to thank you for the help and the concern, we don't want to lose any of them but sometimes there injury are to great.
