So I looked through our towns zoning code and couldnt find a thing about animals except for dogs. I eventually called the zoning office an the only answer I got was "no chickens, they are farm animals and farm animals aren't allowed". When I asked where on the code that this was stated they said " I don't know but it's in there". At this point I'm just trying to decide what to do next. I'm only looking to get a few hens for eggs and that's it.

How much land do you have and are you inside the city limits?

The above is a link to the city zoning regs. All I could find specifically mentioning poultry was this:
(m) No livestock or poultry, quartered or housed within the corporate limits, shall be kept and maintained so as to produce objectionable noise, odor, destruction of property or health problems.

I did a search for agriculture and other than saying you have to keep the housing clean and odor free poultry does not appear to be prohibited:
(a) No person shall erect, continue to use, or maintain a building, structure, or place for the exercise of a trade, employment, or business or for keeping or feeding an animal which, by occasioning noxious exhalations or noisome or offensive smells, becomes injurious to the health, comfort, or property of individuals or of the public.

(b) No person shall cause or allow offal, filth, or noisome substances to be collected or remain in any place to the damage or prejudice of others or of the public.


Agriculture. "Agriculture" means the use of land, buildings or structures for nurseries, greenhouses, farming, dairying, pasturage, apiculture, horticulture, floriculture, viticulture and animal and poultry husbandry.

If you have more than 5 acres and are outside city limits you are exempt from (a) and (b).

I think you might be able to have a few chickens.

Thank you. We live in the city limits and have a half acre lot.

I looked at the ordinances before but I never searched for agriculture only animals and chickens.

On there roofs???? thats silly haha, but im a bit confused do you own just half an acre of do you have half an avalible for chickens? Anyway, good luck with your hens there alot of fun.

Why would you say 1/2 acre isn't enough to raise poultry? Lots of people in many cities in Ohio do have small (less than 10) flocks of chickens. Then what about all those people who raise pigeons (also considered poultry) on apartment roofs in large cities?

Thanks for the support. I'm only plan on having a pair and I know several people that have similar size lots that have more than that.
